A water service line is not a sewer line, and anyone who tells you they will simply run a camera down it is selling you something. It is a small-diameter pipe under pressure with no access point. Camera work happens where the access allows it — at the curb valve, at the tap, at an open excavation.

How we find it
- Acoustic detection picks up the hiss of a break on a pressurized line, long before the street shows anything
- The line traced and the depth read, so the excavation is targeted rather than exploratory
- Opened at the curb valve or the tap, where the camera and the eye can both reach
- Pressure tested after the repair, before anything is backfilled
What tells you the line is failing
Pressure that has quietly dropped over a year. A water bill that climbed with no change in the household. A puddle at the curb or a wet strip of sidewalk that stays dark two days after the last rain.
Cloudy water with sediment. A hissing or rushing sound underground with nothing running inside.
The one that costs the most is the one nobody notices — a slow leak on the owner’s side of the curb valve, running for a year into the soil, arriving as a DEP notice.
Why the diagnosis matters more here
A water service line runs under the sidewalk and usually under the roadway. Restoration to DOT specification is frequently the largest single line on the invoice.
Locating the break within a few feet instead of a few yards is the difference between a targeted excavation and a trench across the street. That is the entire value of doing the diagnostics properly first.
Underground utility locating for contractors
Before the bucket goes in the ground, somebody needs to know what is already down there.
The public mark-out covers gas, electric, telecom and the city water and sewer mains. It does not cover the private water service from the curb valve to the building, or the sewer lateral from the building to the main. Those two are private, shallower, older, and directly in the path of most excavation on a New York City lot.

What a strike actually costs
A severed water service on a Friday is a shutdown, an emergency repair, a DEP notification and a building without water.
A cracked lateral discovered after backfill is worse, because it is discovered later.
Locating is the cheapest line item on the job and the only one that exists to prevent the other ones.
