A water service line is not a sewer line, and anyone who tells you they will simply run a camera down it is selling you something. It is a small-diameter pipe under pressure with no access point. Camera work happens where the access allows it — at the curb valve, at the tap, at an open excavation.
So the honest version is that we locate the leak first, and the camera is one tool of several.
Pressure that has quietly dropped over a year. A water bill that climbed with no change in the household. A puddle at the curb or a wet strip of sidewalk that stays dark two days after the last rain.
Cloudy water with sediment. A hissing or rushing sound underground with nothing running inside.
The one that costs the most is the one nobody notices — a slow leak on the owner’s side of the curb valve, running for a year into the soil, arriving as a DEP notice.
A water service line runs under the sidewalk and usually under the roadway. Restoration to DOT specification is frequently the largest single line on the invoice.
Locating the break within a few feet instead of a few yards is the difference between a targeted excavation and a trench across the street. That is the entire value of doing the diagnostics properly first.

The public mark-out covers gas, electric, telecom and the city water and sewer mains. It does not cover the private water service from the curb valve to the building, or the sewer lateral from the building to the main. Those two are private, shallower, older, and directly in the path of most excavation on a New York City lot.

A severed water service on a Friday is a shutdown, an emergency repair, a DEP notification and a building without water.
A cracked lateral discovered after backfill is worse, because it is discovered later.
Locating is the cheapest line item on the job and the only one that exists to prevent the other ones.
